Fleischmanns
is a quaint incorporated village in the Central Catskills in the Town
of
Middletown, Delaware County in New York State. Fleischmanns is located
130 miles from the George Washington Bridge, 36 miles West of the New
York Thruway (Exit 19) at Kingston. The Village is 20 minutes from
Woodstock,
and only one mile from the Belleayre Ski Center, and the recently
approved Belleayre Resort.
History
The
Village of Fleischmanns goes back to the 1880's when it was called
Griffins Corner. At that time the Fleischmanns family (of Fleischmanns
Yeast fame) vacationed here in the cool pure mountain air. Vacationers
then
could take a boat from New York City up the Hudson river to Kingston,
where
they would then take the railroad west to Fleischmanns (The railroad
station still stands in Fleischmanns).
Fleischmanns then became the
vacation spot for many Broadway celebrities, and in 1929, the
Fleischmanns Theater was built. The first play there was "The Showoff"
produced by the Maverick Players.
Current
Revitalization
Fleischmanns is currently undergoing a revitalization, after
a
period of decline due to changing vacation habits. Today, the area
boasts many second homes as well as a number of motels and B &
B s.
Recently, a study group from the Parsons School of Design working with
SUNY at new Paltz undertook a study aimed at the revitalization of the
Village. In addition, there are two large real estate
projects
planned for the area. One is the Belleayre Resort - a golf course, a
five star hotel and condos, on the Fleischmanns side of the Belleayre
Ski Center. This
project was approved on Sept. 5, 2007; work is expected to start in
Sept. 2008. Over an 8 years span, 1800 construction workers will be
working there. As
part of the project, a build-out of an expanded Belleaye Ski Center is
rumored to include a ski lift coming down to Fleischmanns. The other
is mini-estates of about 5 to 15 acres.
Subdivision approval has already been obtained for this project.
Sanitary Sewers
Work has been completed on the installation of a
sanitary
sewer system for Fleischmanns. The main lines are in, the treatment
plant is operating, and a number of properties have been connected. The
rest of the properties are expected to be connected by the
end of
2007. This improvement is expected to give a large boost to the
Village. Real estate experts estimate that the installation of a sewer
systems adds an increase of about 15 % to property values.
